By the mid-1920s, short-haul passengers were abandoning railroad passenger service. However, significant volumes of milk were still being carried to the New York metro area. The Lehigh Valley Railroad needed to cut costs on lightly-patronized trains.
The answer was to substitute self-propelled gas-electric ”motors” pulling specially-designed trailers. These provided plenty of room for milk and adequate accommodations for passengers and the US Mail. Running on the main and LV’s numerous branch lines, they served customers from the 1920s through the1940s.
Come learn about this important but little-known segment of the Lehigh Valley Railroad’s history.
